Earlier this month, on the cusp of our new physically distanced reality, we were in the midst of 'Walking. A Subversive Design Act', a program we curated for Melbourne Design Week 2020. It included a by-invitation symposium, as well as a walk and a talk with Italian artist and author Francesco Careri. 
With things going the way they have, we made the decision to postpone the symposium and rethink the talk with Francesco Careri. The talk was planned to take place at the National Gallery of Victoria. Instead, we recorded it at our studio so that it can be watched at home. In this lecture, Francesco talks about his practice of collective walking and its capacity to shape spaces, create meaning and form connections between people.

Corviale è il simbolo di tanti quartieri modello abbandonati prima dagli architetti che li avevano immaginati, poi dalle amministrazioni che avrebbero dovuto gestirli e infine dalla città che ha voltato la faccia per non guardarli. Territori lasciati all’auto-organizzazione degli abitanti, agli assistenti sociali, alle strumentalizzazioni dei partiti e al controllo delle questure, dove il potere pubblico ha prodotto più danni che soluzioni e più promesse che fatti.

TITRE: De la part de « recherchés »  PDF

«Je n’aime pas la recherche quand elle n’est utile qu’à ceux qui la font. Je pense qu’il importe de le dire aujourd’hui, au moment où la recherche a recommencé enfin à aborder des questions « sociales » et qu’elle est de nouveau menée « sur le terrain ». Mais il arrive encore trop souvent que de jeunes chercheurs (qu’il soient des philosophes, des architectes ou des urbanistes) se déguisent en ethnologues et qu’ils demandent aux « autochtones » de leur faire cadeau de leur temps, de leurs histoires et de leurs idées pour ensuite s’en aller. Ils rentrent chez eux pour rédiger une thèse que souvent personne ne lira, sauf les membres du jury universitaire. Rien de tout cela ne me paraît utile pour le territoire et pour les personnes étudiées, pour ce que j’appelle les « recherchés ». Certains chercheurs écrivent que leur présence sur le terrain peut servir à déclencher des processus. Plus j’avance et plus je trouve cette expression prétentieuse, creuse et fausse. Il est très difficile de mettre en oeuvre des processus réels et durables. Souvent la recherche s’achève avec les photos d’un banquet ou d’une rencontre qui resteront sans suite. Il me paraît donc plus honnête de se présenter comme les explorateurs désirants de processus en devenir, de participer à un processus en cours et de l’alimenter par notre propre énergie. Si le processus est déjà en cours, il se poursuivra même après notre sortie du terrain de jeu. Et c’est justement ici, dans la sortie du terrain, que l’on peut mesurer la qualité territoriale et politique de la recherche, sa puissance de transformation. La phase la plus importante de la recherche est celle de sa reterritorialisation : comment, où et quand communiquer ce que nous avons compris. Trouver les langages qui conviennent pour transmettre aux « recherchés » les résultats de notre recherche : voici le point fondamental à mes yeux.»

Le déploiement massif et continu des technologies et de l’urbanisme modernes a eu tendance à nous faire oublier que la ville est avant tout un lieu où l’on marche, un lieu que l’on explore, un lieu où l’on rêve, se perd, se retrouve et se rencontre.

L’ambition de cette journée est de croiser les perspectives des lettres, des sciences sociales et du design pour souligner les enjeux culturels, existentiels et politiques d’une meilleure prise en compte de la marche dans la ville.

JE co-organisée par le CERTOP (Cédric Calvignac et Franck Cochoy, avec l’aide de Christelle Abraham) et le CAS (Poéthiques) (Nathalie Cochoy) de l’Université Toulouse le Mirail, en partenariat avec l’institut supérieur des arts de Toulouse (Nathalie Bruyère) avec le soutien de l’ANR.
